Grass of the earth
Spring has finally arrived & glances of baby green are appearing all over the earth. Slowly, the time of brown is fading away and the renewing green is creeping over the land. I so love Spring in the Okanagan because the hills come alive with the grass of the earth. We have such a hot summer that they don't stay green for long but its in these next few months that they become the most beautiful. Some of them, covered with lush greens, like ferns & shrubs, others with thick grasses like a blanket. Still others will burst forth with flowering grasses & mosses.
Grass is referred to in the Bible as something that is renewed, that nourishes but also quickly fades away, like it does here. A promise in the Spring after the rains, a meal for the beasts & cattle, and a reminder that life is short. May you be reminded of these things as Spring arrives in your world & begins to be covered by the grass of the earth.
“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, And as showers on the grass. For I proclaim the name of the LORD: Ascribe greatness to our God. ~ Deuteronomy 32:1-3
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. ~ Genesis 1:11-12
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens that cry. ~ Psalm 147:7-9
Ask the LORD for rain in the time of the latter rain. The LORD will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, Grass in the field for everyone. ~ Zechariah 10:1
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? ~ Luke 12:27-28
The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” ~ Isaiah 40: 7-8

Why is it when the first thing to come to mind when I think 'grass' is mowed, manicured, when there are so many different kinds. I especially love the tall decorative grasses we see being used in landscapings. I love watching the undulating waves in the fields of long grasses in a summer wind. Ah yes, friend, how I long to see the grass where not so long ago the snow covered.

ReplyDeleteI really did not get to get out and take any pictures. It was cloudy all weekend. We are having sand fest next weekend where there is a sandcastle contest. It is a huge contest with sand sculptors from everywhere. I can't wait.
