The Crafty Harlot - Proverbs 7

The "Red Light District" in Amsterdam

"And there was a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. She was loud and rebellious, her feet would not stay at home." Proverbs 7: 10-11

I had a bit of a difficult time pondering this chapter today. Often I would open it & close it again, not sure how I could talk about a chapter that felt a little too personal.

I think the 'harlot' can refer to temptations of many sorts, temptations that can easily ensnare & entice. A temptation that may be desirable to look at, or appear better than what you have.

But literally, our marriages are not as strong as they were for the last 2000 years. I can say this from experience because I was already once divorced at a young age. Divorced from a marriage I believed to have strong Christian roots. But the 'crafty harlot' found her way into my marriage in more ways than one and brought it to ruin. Temptations, distractions, lack of communication, lack of godly wisdom. And I see other marriages around me suffering the same fate. Oh, maybe not from affairs or adultery directly, but other temptations and lack of interest in the things we already have.

I have a new understanding for marriage and hopefully a new wisdom to preserve & protect my marriage. And I can now pray for the other marriages that are out there. Those that are broken, those that are still struggling to make it work, those that are happy, and those that are finding a new covenant in a second marriage. I pray for wisdom, for my own, and for yours!

Marriage is a wonderful blessing from God, family was instituted by Him,but even the strongest love deals with problems, marriage is not always easy, sometimes it is work. Marriage is still strong, people are weak.Effectual prayer availeth much and is a very necessary tool. Laughter playing together and talking and listening, help to keep other temptations out.Life partners are not an unreal concept, not even in this generation. Mom

  3. Oh Becks - we blogged the same subject!!! I'm passionate about marriage, as you know. What was it we talked about one day, but the fact that in general, we invest more time into the upkeep of our cars and houses than we do our marriages? I think a big part of the battle is putting our marriages FIRST - after all, we did commit to giving our best to our marriage partners when we said our vows in the sight of our Lord. I'm not talking about unbalanced or unhealthy, abusive relationships, but barring that, we owe our life-partners the BEST the word the REST. Thanks for another wonderful post!
